The North American Soccer League (NASL) was the premier professional soccer league in the United States and Canada, operating from 1968 to 1984. It was the first soccer league to achieve national success in the U.S., setting the stage for future developments in American soccer, including the 1994 FIFA World Cup and the establishment of Major League Soccer (MLS) in 1996.

Iconic Teams

  • Los Angeles Aztecs™: Known for their dynamic play and star-studded lineup, including George Best and Johan Cruyff, the Aztecs won the NASL Championship in 1974.
  • Chicago Sting™: One of only two NASL teams to win the championship twice (1981 and 1984), the Sting were a powerhouse in both outdoor and indoor soccer.
  • Memphis Rogues™: Playing their home games at Memphis’ Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium, the Rogues were a key part of the NASL in the late 70s and early 80s.
  • Washington Diplomats™: Featuring the legendary Johan Cruyff in their final season, the Diplomats drew significant crowds and left a lasting impact on D.C. soccer.
  • Detroit Express™: Known for their explosive offense, including Trevor Francis, the Express still hold the record for the widest margin of victory in an American major pro soccer match.
  • Boston Minutemen™: Home to Portuguese legend Eusébio, the Minutemen boasted a lineup of star players and played at several iconic Boston venues.
